Waterfalls
Local Waterfalls
The Jocassee Gorges region boasts an abundance of waterfalls, driven by hard local rock, high annual rainfall (80 inches), and the Blue Ridge Escarpment. Among these, Laurel Fork Falls stands out as the crown jewel. This stunning three-tiered, 80-foot cascade is primarily accessible by boat. While the middle section offers a refreshing swimming hole and the lower section spills directly into the lake, the upper falls are best viewed via a scenic one-mile hike on the Foothills Trail. Whether by boat or foot, exploring these cascading treasures is a highlight of the Lake Jocassee experience.
Whitewater Falls
At the lake’s northwest corner, where the Whitewater River enters, boaters can view only the final rapids of Whitewater Falls. Although the full waterfall is impossible to see from one spot, it remains a must-see destination, claiming the title of the highest series of falls east of the Mississippi, featuring a remarkable 411-foot drop. The falls span two sections: Upper Whitewater Falls in North Carolina and Lower Whitewater Falls in South Carolina. While the base is visible by water, the most impressive views are found by driving to and hiking the two overlooks, which remain inaccessible directly from the lake.
